Back to School

It's that time of year again! Gone are the LAZY days of summer, and we are back to the grind.

Revel in it I say! I love the smell of new school supplies and learning in the air.

Now being organized is definitely NOT my strong suit, however I will attempt yet again to get my kiddie to bed early, get them to school on time, AND pack healthy lunches the night before...yeah right! OK how about healthy snacks?

Try this one with your little scholars ( bet they won't be able to tell the difference...), and this is perfect for a pre-Zumba class energy booster!

WOW mom and dad you are awesome!

Healthier Banana Bread/Muffins

Ingredients

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup sugar free applesauce

3/4 cup honey

2 eggs, beaten

3 mashed overripe bananas

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, mix together applesauce and honey. Stir in eggs and mashed bananas until well blended. Stir banana mixture into flour mixture; stir just to moisten. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.

Bake in preheated oven for 60 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.

Eat Light

Ahhhh...Spring is in the air. Time to lighten our meals.

Try this...

Low Carb Zucchini

split zucchini in 1/2

brush with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic and salt

add sliced tomatoe

add parmesan or mozzarella

bits of basil

bake at 375 for 25-30 min

ENJOY!

Yummy Salad

So my sister has been visiting from Winnipeg and tried veganism for about one year...she came up with this awesome Raw Kale Salad. This salad kicks butt...and is sooo good for you!

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Shred the kale - get as much of the ribbing out as possible - and massage with some lemon juice or let it sit awhile with dressing before eating to soften it.

I used a shredded carrot, raisins, and walnuts, and 1/2 cup cooked quinoa.

I also used 1/2 the recipe for the dressing for one bunch of kale.

Dressing: http://vegweb.com/recipes/goddess-home-dressing

The dressing is called "Goddess At Home" (LOVE IT!)

I just used Japanese soy sauce instead of tamari with a splash of rice wine vinegar if you have it. I don't think it matters much.

This dressing is awesome I also use it with quinoa/chickpea salads

Enjoy!

Back to School

As summer comes to a screeching halt and we send our little ones back to school, we are forced to say good-bye to margaritas and sangria on the deck, barbeques and ice cream.

With our kids safely in the loving and nurturing arms of their teachers, it is time for us to turn focus back to ourselves.... What a concept!

We never stop being our childrens best teachers. Let's be great role models for our kids! By showing them that eating right and taking time for physical activity makes us healthier and happier, we are setting them up for health and wellness for their entire lives. Let's teach them to loves themselves!

Leave reading, writing and arithmatic to the professionals .....

"Life Gets in the Way"

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 8:50 PM Comments comments (0)

As many who know me are probably aware, my father Nasim has been very sick. And I mean SICK. Now I could have just thrown in the towel, kicked of my running shoes, and abandoned my commitment to fitness to care for my dad.

I understand that life can sometimes get in the way.

Stress at work, family issues, relationship problems, moving or starting a new job are just a few reasons that care for our personal well-being often fall by the wayside.

But I feel confident when I say that staying physically healthy and emotionally content, will do my dad and my family alot more good than the alternative. For if we are not sound emotionally and physically, we are harming not only ourselves, but also those who love and need us.

Food for thought...

The next time you give up your hike or your workout, ask yourself..."Aren't I worth it?"

YES YOU ARE!!

Out of the Zumba Box

In my quest to finish my practicum hours, I must admit, I have avoided everything non-Zumba. Tomorrow morning I will "teach" Colleen's Step and Strength class (or at least part of it!)

I have hung up my cross trainers for the night and wiped the last of the sweat off my brow. To my families relief the group fitness music has been quieted in our house.

To say I am a little nervous is a huge understatement, but it must be done. I do admit, formulating my Step combos in my kitchen was alot of fun and I do feel a shade of excitement and maybe even a little confidence. Wish me luck!

Sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone.

Like NIKE says...Just Do It!

To stave off hunger a few hours after a meal....

Leave some on your face to snack on later. You should see Eva's girlish figure!

My Fitness Journey

Posted on August 11, 2012 at 7:35 PM Comments comments (0)

I think turning forty ( yes I am 40 !) was a big wake up call for me. Half way through my life and I started wondering what I wanted to be when I grow up! I'd been talking about what a great idea it would be to be in the fitness industry, as I watched my good friend and neighbor Collen get up and out everyday helping others achieve their fitness goals. Wow, wouldn't it be great to be fit and get paid for it! But I dragged my heels for yet another year and them WHAMMO, I heard of a new fitness craze called "ZUMBA"! What's that? All I needed to hear was that it involved sexy Latin dancing as a form of cardio excersise and people are getting fit. Well sign me up!

And that is what I did! Before even attending one single class, I signed up to learn how to teach it. I do not regret that decision, and feel it was the catalyst for this new fitness journey I now find myself fully engulfed in.

After becoming a certified Zumba instructor, I decided to go "legit" and get myself certified and a Group Fitness Instructor with the fitness industry's governing body...the BCRPA.

I am still chugging along, and am very close as I only need a few more hours of practicum hours to qualify me to take the practical evaluation.

I spent part of my day today at HFA (Health and Fitness Alliance), helping out Silvia Isachsen ( teacher extrordinaire!) teach new group fitness students embark on their journeys.

.

Thank you Colleen Waldron, for being a great roll model. Thanks for showing me how it's done. You are a loving wife and mother, loyal friend and an active participant in the community. You are beautiful, sexy and strong!

Thank you Silvia Isachsen, for being a mentor. Not just for me, but for veryone you meet. You see the best in people, and are helping me realize my potential! What you are doing at and with HFA is amazing! I am excited to see your dream become a reality!

Zuma Love Y'all,
